Course Title: Spanish 1, Spanish 1 (8), Spanish 1 (7)
Course Description:
This class introduces students to the formal and informal conversation, vocabulary, grammar, and cultures of Spanish speaking countries. The course is designed for students with no previous background in Spanish. Students should have and/or develop good study habits and memorization skills. This qualifies as a college preparatory class and daily study time is essential for success. A grade of “C” or better is recommended to go on to Spanish 2. We will study 10 Chapters in Spanish 1.
The Foreign Language Content Standards cover five basic areas:
Communication: communicate in languages other than English
Cultures: gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures
Connections: connect with other disciplines and acquire information
Comparisons: develop insight into the nature of language and culture
Communities: participate in multilingual communities at home & around the world
Supplies Needed for Class:
Please have the following supplies in class daily:
_____ One small binder with filler paper for Spanish class only. Or a section in a large binder.
Or a spiral notebook and folder for Spanish class only.
_____ One blue or black ball point pen or pencil.
_____ One colored pen or marker (used to correct class assignments and quizzes).
_____ “Buen viaje” textbook (covered neatly)
_____ “Buen viaje” workbook
Homework and assignments due for class, MUST be brought to class daily. Students will not receive homework points for the day if the assignment is not brought to class. To receive full credit on homework, it must be completely finished and on time. If a textbook is not brought to class, students will not receive points during random book checks.
CLASSROOM POLICIES AND GUIDELINES
Students will be evaluated every Chapter with a variety of assignments:
All student activities, including homework, classwork, quizzes, exams, projects (both oral and written), notebooks, and class participation will count toward the final grade.
45% of the final grade Written Assessments… exams, quizzes, compositions, projects, booklets, and reports
20 % of the final grade Oral Assessments…exams, quizzes and presentations
20% of the final grade Daily homework, class work and class participation
15% of the final grade Final semester exams
Finals consist of 3 parts:
1) a multiple choice exam that includes grammar, listening, reading comprehension, culture and vocabulary………………………….50%
2) an oral exam……………………………………30%
3) a composition or project…………………….20%
The grading scale for this class is as set up in Illuminate.
**Borderline grades will only be rounded up to the larger number at 0.5% or more.
(A score of 89.5% would constitute an "A," but an 89.4% would merit a "B").
Office Hours: I will be available during 7/8 lunch, STEP or Homeroom, or see me to make an appointment. I am in the cafeteria during 6th period, daily. If you are available during that time, I am happy to work with you one on one at that time.
Homework: Homework will be written on the board for students, daily, as well as on our Power points, and posted in Google classroom and my website. (lturnipseed.weebly.com) All homework is due at the beginning of the class period and must be complete to receive credit. Late work will only be accepted for half credit the following day.
Class Projects: Class and group projects will be assigned. It is extremely important that you are in class on these days, especially if a group project/presentation is involved. In the case of serious illness or other extenuating circumstances, a parent call or email is expected.
Assessments: This course will comply with the current school board policy.
Binders: Throughout this course you should keep an orderly binder containing all class notes, exercises, and handouts, (in order by date) as well as all homework assignments and quizzes. You should also keep track of all of your grades. Make sure that you keep every paper from this class in your binder. DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY!!!
Tardies: It is very important that you arrive to class on time. You must be in your seat by the time the tardy bell rings, ready to begin class. Tardies will affect your citizenship grade as follows:
0 or 1 tardy during the semester……………………………Outstanding (O)
2 tardies during the semester……………………………….Satisfactory (S)
3 tardies during the semester…………………………Needs Improvement (N)
4 or more tardies……………………………………………Unsatisfactory (U)
Your attitude and behavior in class also affects your citizenship grade. Smile, be positive and make learning your priority.
Absenteeism and Make-up: AS LONG AS YOUR ABSENCE IS EXCUSED, THE FOLLOWING POLICIES APPLY:
1 DAY ABSENT: 2 DAYS TO MAKE-UP TESTS, QUIZZES, CLASS WORK, HOMEWORK (starting from the first day you return to school).
2 DAYS ABSENT 3 DAYS TO MAKE-UP TESTS, QUIZZES, CLASS WORK, HOMEWORK (starting from the first day you return to school).

If an absence is unexcused, make up tests, quizzes or class work will not be an option.
HOMEWORK AND CLASSWORK: A homework assignment that was due on the first day of your absence will always be due on the day you return to class. All makeup work is to be shown to me when I check homework at the beginning of class. It is your responsibility to get the assignments you missed and to turn them in ON TIME.(Consult the calendar in google classroom or on my website).
QUIZZES AND EXAMS: Make-up quizzes, written and oral exams will be given during lunch, STEP, homeroom, or see me to make an appointment.
Truancies: Absolutely no work may be made up when a truancy is involved. If a student has already made up a quiz or exam before I have been notified of the truancy, the score will become a zero. Be aware that thirty minutes or more late to class is considered a truancy.
Suspensions: Absolutely no work may be made up when a suspension is involved. This includes homework, quizzes and exams.

Use of cellphones and electronics during class is permitted only by the teacher. At designated times, we will use smartphones/chromebooks for the purpose of learning. Please do not use electronics for other reasons.

If any of the above rules are broken, the consequences will be:
FIRST A verbal warning.
SECOND A brief discussion with me outside of class.
THIRD A call home to parents or guardians.
FOURTH A referral to Dr. Gold (grade 7/8) or Ms. Mary Hazlett (grade 9-12)
In the case of severe circumstances (cussing, fighting, bullying, or drug/alcohol use) a student will immediately be sent out of class with a referral to Dr. Gold or Ms. Mary Hazlett.
Academic Honesty: You are expected to demonstrate honesty and integrity while in attendance at La Cañada High School. You are expected to do your own work. The following are some examples of cheating: claiming credit for work not the product of one's own honest effort (e.g. copying homework answers from any source; creating your own English composition and using any online or offline program to translate sentences or the entire piece; copying in the target language a composition and modifying it to fit the assignment's requirements; cutting and pasting any material - translated or not - and submitting it as your own work; answering a test question by directly quoting another portion of the exam or quiz).
Students who cheat will receive a “0”on the assignment and a “U” on the citizenship grade for the quarter. Consequences of violations will be determined based on the Academic Honesty Policy. Consult the Academic Honesty Policy for further explanations and repercussions.
Students who cheat should expect to be confronted by their teacher or staff member observing this behavior and be subject to the following consequences:
1. Zero on the assignment or test
2. Notification of parents
3. Establishment of a cheating record with the office of Discipline
4. The student may be referred to the Student Honor Court
Academically allowable work includes the following:
1. Use of a dictionary (online or offline) to look up single words within the context of a sentence which you personally have constructed.
2. Within a composition, referencing ideas from another source. This must be cited (at a very minimum, mentioning the name of the source within your work), and, unless using quotation marks, must be rephrased in your own words.
3. Answering a test question by referencing ideas from another source rephrased in your own words.

- A written composition every quarter.
